Carder School’s Playground Project is off and running!

June 17 was a very special day for the entire Carder community, as designers from Ithaca’s Leathers Associates spent the entire day at the school. All Carder kids participated in interviews with the designers, and drew their dream playgrounds. Ideas from the kids were incorporated into a preliminary schematic design for Carder’s new playground. In the evening, a huge crowd showed up for the “PARTY for PLAY” – a community celebration to kick off the school and neighborhood project

A HUGE thank you to all those who helped start our project on the right note, especially our Design Day sponsor, the Southside Neighborhood Association. Many local businesses offered in-kind donations – including Endeavor Services Group, who generously donated a laptop computer for our raffle. Thanks too, to all who bought raffle tickets, pickets and handprint tiles to support the project.

Remember, to make the kids’ dreams come true, we need YOUR help:

  • Please complete a volunteer form to let us know what you can help with in terms of fundraising, planning and on the build itself. By the time we’re through, we’ll need more than 700 volunteers – so we need everyone to pitch in!
  • Buy a picket or handprint tile to support the playground!

On the day after Design Day, our Carder classrooms participated in a playground naming contest. We are pleased to announce that Mrs. Stratford’s third grade class had the winning entry, and our new playground will be called Koala Run!

Watch for more playground news on this site as the summer proceeds, and before school starts we’ll launch a new Web site specifically designed to keep you informed about the playground. We’ll also be sending out regular e-updates.
